Energy Efficient Building Practices: Part 1

The world has become increasingly aware of the need for sustainability and energy efficient building practices. At Nautilus Construction, we are working towards incorporating energy saving techniques which not only benefit the environment but also there are cost savings. Here are a few energy efficient building practices we are looking at and why they are essential in today’s world.

1. Building with Insulation in Mind

One of the primary ways to enhance a buildings energy efficiency is through proper insulation. Using insulation is a great way to maintain temperature stability in both warmer and colder months. This also reduces the need for artificial heating and cooling, which accounts for a significant portion of energy use. Types of insulation we are use include spray foam insulation, fiberglass insulation, rockwool, & dense pack cellulose.

2. Energy Efficient Windows and Doors

Windows and doors are often overlooked when considering energy efficiency. But often they are the source of heat loss. Installing energy efficient doors and windows will drastically improve a buildings thermal performance. Here are some ideas for energy efficient window features: double or triple glazing, low emissivity coatings, and proper framing and air sealing.

3. Solar Energy Integration

We recently did a blog on solar panels! They have become the hallmark of energy efficiency. The PV panels not only reduce the reliance on fossil fuels but also end up saving money for homeowners. (check out our previous blog).

4. Efficient Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems

A well-designed HVAC system not only improves comfort but can also reduce energy consumption by optimizing the use of heating and cooling. A good HVAC practice we use a lot are Heat pumps and proper ventilation. A well-insulated house can have their primary heating and cooling come from electric heat pumps. Options include wall hung units, floor mount units, and ducted units. House ventilation will also need to be planned for proper indoor air quality.

Incorporating energy efficient practices into design and construction is now becoming a necessity as we face growing environmental challenges. In the next blog, we will talk about sustainable building materials, smart building technologies and water conservation and management.
